Junior Doctor Induction
A warm welcome to you as a new doctor working in Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust Emergency Department. We hope that you will take the opportunity to learn and educate yourselves as well as working hard and enjoying your time in Plymouth.
During your stay with us your education and professional development is one of our priorities. To this end we have arranged an induction program which will inform you about the way we work in the ED, and how to manage some of the common emergencies.

Junior doctor induction
Day 1 Program link (Dec; Feb; Apr) Program link (Aug)
Day 1 is compulsory for all new doctors starting in the Emergency department and will be on your rota. You will receive an email with information of where and what time to report.
On Day 2 there is a bespoke foundation doctor ( F1 & F2 ) induction commencing at 08h15 for F1 (only) and 09h00 for F1 and F2. Please note that the 08h15 bespoke session for F1 doctors is an operational requirement and takes place in the emergency department. At 09h00 these groups will join up for the rest of the morning in the Terence Lewis Building SIM suite. The afternoon of the 3rd is reserved for self-study and e-learning for the F1 and F2's.
(Please note that some of you will not need to attend the Hospital Trust induction. Please confirm this with Workforce development if you are unsure. That being the case, you will attend the Emergency Department at 0830 where you will receive a bespoke induction and probably start on the shop floor in the afternoon. )
Please dress appropriately as you will be visiting clinical areas. This includes short sleeves and bare below the elbows. Refer to the trust dress code for clinical areas or ask if unsure.
Clinical supervision
You will receive a named consultant at the start of your placement as your clinical supervisor who will be responsible for overseeing your clinical work and providing constructive feedback during your training placement. You should make contact within the first 2 weeks for your first meeting, and we expect you to meet a total of 2-3 times during your placement.
Education program
We recognise that working in the Emergency Department for the first time can be daunting and unlike other hospital environments in to which you have previously been exposed. As a result we have a specific educational and induction programme aimed towards your needs. As adult learners we expect you to take your educational needs seriously and invest time in meeting those needs proactively. You can access more information regarding the education program here.
You can contact the Education Faculty for more information.

Scrubs
We encourage you to wear scrubs when on duty. You are entitled to 2 pairs of scrubs, which you can collect from Clare Furlonger (ED secretary) in the admin office in the ED.
Legible writing
There is only one gold standard of care when putting your name to something in a healthcare environment (drug chart, notes, ECG, anything), and that is that we PRINT or stamp our name. An illegible squiggle signature is not even wooden standard of care so we should not go there. Illegible is illegible !! Below is a link to a website that sells name stamps for very little; you choose your own wording. They last for ages, and will save you lots of time. Or PRINT your name. Your call. http://www.stampsdirect.co.uk/self-inking-stamp-printerbrs-841-24mm-x-8mm-1-p.asp
Tea Fund
There is a tea/coffee fund that you can subscribe to, by contacting Sister (**) The fee is £6 per month or 40p per shift (this is payable via a standing order as well).
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries. I look forward to working with you over the coming months.
Best wishes
Dr Annette Rickard
