- ...Get involved with existing Audits, Quality Improvement and Research Projects . We nearly always have a range of projects going on in the department. These are used to report back locally so that we can improve the care we provide. The national Royal College of Emergency Medicine audits feed into national data which is used to monitor and benchmark the performance of different EDs in key areas (this year's audit is looking at Paediatric Pain Management). It is important to disseminate audit and quality improvement findings locally, so you may be expected to help present findings. In addition, we usually submit our audits and QI projects for presentation- for example, at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Conference. We're always after help with data collection and interpretation; please speak to one of the team if you're interested!
- ...Design your own audit, Quality Improvement or Research Project. It is possible as a student to design and manage your own audit. Although you will be expected to commit your time, we can help you generate a realistic project, help with methodology, registering your audit and helping you interpret your results and act on these. Designing your own project not only gives you a host of generic skills, boosts your C.V and shows commitment to speciality for interviews, it demonstrates great leadership skills. This is something to seriously consider if you'd like to consider building an application for an Academic Fellowship, or similar.

- ....for an elective If you choose to join us for an undergraduate elective in the emergency department, we'd really recommend using some of the time to help with some audit, research and education to both enrich your experience and help build your C.V.
- ...Research Special Study Module (R SSU). We've accepted our first cohort of third year Plymouth Medical Students this year, who are each responsible for their own project. The students are expected to produce a research poster, design a future work proposal, and present their findings to our department. Our students are fully supported in producing their own research output, which can be a poster for a national or international conference or manuscript for peer reviewed publication.
- ...Intercalated BSc in Urgent & Emergency Care. We welcome students who have completed their fourth year of medical studies to join our department for a full year as a student on the Plymouth University intercalated degree programme in Urgent & Emergency Care. As you'll be with us for a full year, there are rich opportunities to get involved in research and develop your own Quality Improvement Project. Students from across the UK may apply. See here for further details.
