CT3 in Emergency Medicine

must read: Further useful information on your CT3 year
Welcome!

You are working as a CT3 for one year and the paediatric component of your training occurs over this time

There are two paeds EM consultants in the department: Ian Higginson (Higgi) is an old style generalist + Paeds EM consultant and Andrew Robinson (Andy) is a modern paediatrician with additional expertise in Paeds EM. Together with Charlotte Durrant we are now trying to move Paeds EM forwards and we would like you to be part of that

You are sitting uncomfortably between “junior” and “senior” level. In practice this means that you will be treated as experienced doctors, but you are not senior doctors when it comes to things that senior doctors need to sign off etc… unless formally delegated. You will also not be expected to manage the department alone, including overnight. This is the time to prepare yourself for that responsibility however

Rota:
  • You won’t be doing nights on your own but you will be working overnight in the company of a more experienced doctor
  • During your year you should aim to see 750 children in different guises
  • You will each have a 4-week attachment on paeds. Try not to take leave during this time. This part of the job will contribute strongly towards the requirement to see lots of kids.
  • We are also trying to set up an obstetric component to give you some exposure to neonatal resuscitation, handling babies, and whilst you are at it some obstetrics!
During the year:
  • Trainees to be supported attending paeds-related teaching and governance during the course of the year whether within the department or elsewhere
  • Attendance at regional registrar training program mandatory (program now redesigned to incorporate paeds curriculum)
  • Completion of specific e-learning relating to paediatric emergency medicine recommended
  • APLS (or PILS) to be completed by the end of the year. You need to be APLS positive by the time you come off the top but it’s a good idea to have done one earlier. NLS is probably a bit over the top for what you need but neonatal resus is on the curriculum
  • Level 3 child protection course to be completed by the end of the year.
  • Attendance at a child protection related case conference during the course of the year desirable
  • It would also be a good idea to attend one of the obstetric statutory training days (PROMPT): they are a good refresher for obstetric emergencies

We are also requiring you to:
  • Demonstrate proof of achievement of competencies as per curriculum document etc
  • Produce at least one guideline relating to the management of a paediatric emergency presentation OR an audit relating to children during the year desirable

And we recommend:
  • CT3s formally present or teach around a paediatric theme during the course of the year

Andy and Higgi will keep you posted as we work out what improvements we want to make and how you can take part in that through the year

We are expecting to meet with you on Aug 25th to officially get going, but Andy is here the first two weeks in August and Higgi the third week
