Clinical Fellow in EM & Undergraduate Medical Education

This is a new post funded by Peninsula Medical School in recognition of onerous teaching duties undertaken by the Emergency Department.  Currently the department provides 11 regular sessions teaching per week during the majority of the academic year. In addition other teaching episodes are provided in a variety of formats.

Duties of the post
Teaching
An average of 4 sessions per week will be devoted to clinical teaching of / assessing PMS medical students. This will usually be within the department but may occasionally be at a nearby PMS facility.   Duties will include small group clinical teaching as well as delivery of tutorial-type sessions. The post holder will be well supported by clinicians familiar with the relevant processes and will be released to attend PMS delivered modular induction sessions as required.

The post holder will also participate in formal and situational teaching of junior doctors and nursing staff within the department.

Clinical
The post-holder’s clinical duties will sit within the middle grade (full shift) rota.  The appointee will be required to play an active role in the supervision of junior doctors working within the department as well as seeing, assessing and treating patients.  The duties will include teaching sessions and audit.

Timetable
This timetable is subject to amendment. The rota will require some flexibility as it sits within the middle grade rota which needs to accommodate 17 doctors.  During the academic term 5-6 sessions per week will be allocated to direct clinical care, 1.5 sessions to CPD and 3-4 sessions to PMS activity, to a total of 12 sessions (48 hours) per week. Some shop floor sessions will be overnight 20h00-08h15.  Duties will average out at 4 x 10hr shifts per week plus weekends (1:3 either day or night shifts) which are usually accompanied by the day off after.

Salary
This will be a Band 1A post regulated in accordance with The Terms and Conditions of Service NHS Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2002; version 10 (31/3/13). Salary will be in accordance with the Pay Circular (M&D) 1/2013.
